Eerie Erie: Good Times for All!
The Eerie Erie is the annual community race held every year on the Saturday before Halloween, and routed right by the cemetery and along Colliers Blvd. It’s both a serious and a fun run attracting runners from all over the state, many of them wearing wigs, costumes, Halloween makeup and alter-ego get-ups.
This year the race included donkey and burro runners with their handlers, which was quite a site to see traipsing through the neighborhood!
Since 1982 the Optimists Club of Erie has hosted this huge community event which grows larger every year and takes an army of volunteers to plan, coordinate and execute. Says Joanne Pastor, President and Chairman of the Optimists Club — founded to aid and encourage the development of the town’s youth — the Eerie Erie is their number one fundraising event for the year. And 100 percent of the revenue generated by entry fees goes toward the funding of programs the club offers to children.
Fun Run and Timed Races
As with many foot races, the elite runners charge out in front, and families gravitate toward the back of the pack with strollers and dogs on leashes. The Goblin Run which sees about 250 kids in their costumed finery take off on the middle school running track, is a much-anticipated race for the wee ones. Lots of kids run the race by themselves, but some of the littles get encouragement from siblings and parents.
The race route that travels along a stretch of Colliers Blvd. has a jaw-dropping backdrop of gorgeous mountain views. Race participants exhibit both intense and competitive concentration, and a spirit of fun and camaraderie as they wind through the town of Erie.
