New Year’s TV-Watching Recipes!
We’re ringing in the New Year (and decade!) tonight at midnight with a few different appetizers to go along with our celebratory cocktails! And whether you need to supplement your New Year’s Eve finger-food menu, or plan to home-gait on New Year’s Day and watch the NY6 college bowl games, here’s a flat-bed full of palate-pleasing appetizer recipes that’ll fit any occasion!
We had no idea such a thing exists, but there’s an actual tailgating cookbook, a companion to one of the major U.S. collegiate sports conferences. The All-New Official SEC® Tailgating Cookbook featured at Sports Illustrated rounded up a few favorite and traditional recipes for the college football (and food) fan. One that seems worth a try is the Smoked War Eagle Wings recipe with a vinegar-mayo-Worcestershire dip.
Those wings will go well with Real Simple’s Mini Twice-Baked Potatoes using tiny new potatoes and a filling of butter, sour cream, half the potato (mashed), sharp cheddar, chopped chives and a sprinkle of bacon. Further into the curated batch of appetizers you’ll find another mini potato treat – Bacon-Wrapped Potatoes with Creamy Dill Sauce.
To Dip or Not to Dip
And what sounds tastier than to slather onto a plateful of cut veggies this slow-cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip? With plenty of Frank’s Red Hot (or your favorite hot sauce), the chefs at Southern Living splashed it onto a melted combo of Colby-Jack, cream cheese, mozzarella and blue cheese, blending in sour cream and about three cups of cooked chicken.
For another cheesy combo, this time with shrimp and garlic – try Delish’s Garlicky Shrimp Dip. You’ll need three cheeses and mayo, plus a pound of shrimp, which is all perfect piled on a pita chip.
If your tastes, or your guests’, run more toward red meat, tackle this Taco Dip from Hungry Happenings with ground beef, taco seasoning, refried beans, diced tomatoes, black olives, diced jalapeños and sharp shredded cheddar. Add a bag o’ sturdy tortilla chips and get to snackin’!
You’ll find 43 more New Year’s Day recipes at Southern Living like Tater Nachos and Pull-Apart Pizza Bread or check out the 39 New Year’s Eve recipes at Delish like Crab Artichoke Dip, Bacon Spinach Dip or Candied Bacon-Wrapped Smokies to go with binge-watching NCAA football or any notable Netflix series you missed during 2019.
Deep or Air-Fried?
Blogger Amy for She Wears Many Hats is all about the dill. This Fried Pickles recipe is a little on the spicy side – not too hot, but with a definite kick. Amy offers a couple of links to tips on deep frying, which are helpful if you’re not a regular. And while the pickle-tang and seasoned batter go together like bread and butter, Amy’s Comeback Sauce is for all sorts of finger foods that call for dipping.
You can always opt for air fryer recipes which – if the photos are half-way realistic and not totally food-styled, look just as good as the fried-in-oil variety! How about Honey Goat Cheese Balls with crispy Panko breading, finished off with a generous drizzle of honey? Thank you Danielle at The Creative Bite!
Or for an absolutely elegant appetizer on a toothpick, try the easy-peasy two-ingredient Bacon-Wrapped Scallops (because what doesn’t taste great wrapped in bacon?!). Gina at Skinny Taste offers up plenty of air fryer tips and benefits – because let’s face it with two ingredients, the recipe for this seafood “starter” is super simple! But she’s dedicated a complete section on her site to air fryer recipes for more appies (like Twice-Air-Fried Plantains and Avocado Egg Rolls) plus entrees and sides, too!
Diethood offers up tasty Buffalo Cauliflower Bites that you can dip in creamy blue cheese, and Favcity puts together this tasty Coconut Shrimp – air-fried of course — recipe for seafood lovers.
And for dessert? These air fryer Churros with Chocolate Sauce from Cooking Light should satisfy the sweet tooth. The cinnamon-sugar crusted churros are light and crunchy and the chocolate sauce is the perfect topping.
