We’re celebrating Pi Day (March 14) with scrumptious recipes that have nothing to do with mathematics, and everything to do with savory pies! And we don’t just mean quiche and chicken pot pie. Oh no, we’ve got the recipes you’ve never heard of – the Ultimate Pasta Pie, Nectarine Prosciutto Galettes, fish pie, pork pie and more! And these tasty pastry treats are so mouth-watering you may not make it to the end of the blog before you need a snack!
Ground Beef, Tomato and Potato Pie Recipes
The Spruce Eats claims this Cheeseburger Pie recipe is family-tested and kid-approved and fills the bill for a busy week-day dinner! With a frozen pie crust or refrigerated pastry dough, this pie is super quick and easy with 10 minutes of prep and 35 minutes to the table. With onion, garlic, ground beef plus all the cheeseburger must-haves, you can add fresh tomatoes and bacon if you like, plus plenty of dill pickles and ketchup.
Speaking of tomatoes, this vintage, veggie-filled Tomato Pie from Southern Living is an old-fashioned surprise with heirloom tomatoes, sweet onion, fresh herbs and two kinds of cheese. And if you’re wild about tomatoes (or plan to grow your own this summer) there’s a Tomato Cobbler and an herbed Tomato Tart here, too, with feta and mozzarella made pizza-style on puff pastry.
Savory Meat Pie from Taste of Home combines ground beef, onions and garlic, with potatoes, chopped carrot, thyme, sage, cinnamon, Dijon mustard and chili sauce. The potatoes are mashed and there are flecks of carrot in every bite. Savory, sage-y and cinnamon-y.
Unusually Good Savory Pies to Make at Home
Pork pie is a standard, traditional dish for the Brits, combining pork, chicken, apricots and thyme. The way Sorted Eats does it – see the YouTube video tutorial – is all homemade from crust to filling. Rumor has it that these were designed to eat on horseback by English gentlemen on fox hunts. The pair of chefs use humor and panache to walk you through the process – cracking jokes all the way.
The All Recipes version of Pork Pie combines ground pork and beef with onions in a more purist approach, with not much more than salt and pepper for seasonings, and double-crusts.
Another British concoction, this one from Gordon Ramsey, is the Fish Pie with a combination of salmon, haddock, scallops and prawns. The seafood is all folded into mashed potatoes, seasoned with shallots, lemon juice, thyme, dry vermouth and Pernod.
The Recipe Tin Eats version of fish pie uses a combination of smoked and unsmoked fish, with fresh tarragon, peas, quartered hard-boiled eggs and smothers it all in a creamy white sauce, topped with mashed potatoes.
The Ultimate Pot Pie Recipes
The Chicken Curry Pot Pie from Bon Appetit, gives the traditional chicken pot pie a flavor enhancement. Chefs added garlic, ginger, soy sauce, curry powder plus one chopped green apple, cut carrots and one potato. Using chicken thighs and one sheet of puff pastry, for curry fans this ticks all the boxes. Some home chefs add red pepper flakes for just a bit of heat.
The Beef and Curry Pot Pie from Epicurious is either a meal or a snack on the go since it’s a tidy little package of pastry wrapped around ground chuck, onions, potatoes and frozen peas flavored with Madras curry powder.
