2021 Colors of the Year
Every year we wait for paint companies and design experts to announce the colors of the year – usually a reflection of art, fashion, design, environmental and cultural influences.
Pantone Picks Two for 2021
Aiming for “a message of happiness supported by fortitude,” Pantone – best known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS), a proprietary color space used in a variety of industries — has announced that for 2021, it chose TWO colors of the year.
Pantone describes Illuminating as a “bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power.” This optimistic hue is paired with Ultimate Gray, a color that is “emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation.” Ultimate Gray is inspired by natural elements, like pebbles on a beach that have a weathered appearance but prove they can stand the test of time.
The announcement was made last month by the Pantone Color Institute, the consulting wing of the New Jersey-based printing and design specialist. It was the second time in the selection’s 22-year history that two colors have been chosen. In 2016, soft hues of rose and blue were picked as twin winners.
In Pantone’s press release the rationale behind the 2021 selections was based on current events: “The combination…is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter.” The gray in particular is said to encourage “feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience.”
Benjamin Moore Color of the Year: Aegean Teal
Well, that’s one way to look at color, right? But Benjamin Moore went in a different direction so if you don’t spark to yellow and/or gray, maybe a blend of blue, green and gray is more your speed. Aegean Teal is the Benjamin Moore color chosen after a year-long exploration into design, art, fashion, cultural and environmental influences around the globe. From its library of over 3,500 colors, the Benjamin Moore color gurus carefully curated a Color Trends palette “to balance modern-day relevance with long-lasting appeal”.
Aegean Teal expresses “a welcoming, lived-in quality that celebrates the connections and real moments that take place within the home,” says Andrea Magno, the director of color marketing and development at Benjamin Moore.
This hue is also intended to offer stability during these uncertain times. Must be the gray?
Sherwin Williams Color and Color Collection of the Year
And now for a rich, bold red, aptly and unapologetically named: Passionate. This hue feels simultaneously modern and traditional and is part of a larger color collection labeled “Delightfully Daring,” which includes shades of aqua, a rich brown, and an energetic green. When paired with soft shades of white and natural decor elements, this color adds energy to a room without overwhelming it.
Say the marketers at Sherwin Williams, “As we spend more time at home, we’ve begun to uncover what truly makes us happy. We’re breaking free from expectations and immersing ourselves into the colors and experiences that feed our souls. Our personal spaces become a reflection of our authentic selves, to be experienced and enjoyed as they are.”
Who knew colors could do all that?! Sherwin Williams is picking a new color every month and January’s is Urbane Bronze – described as bold and modern. It’s definitely dark and dramatic – if WE may be so bold.
If you’re not sure which color might transform a room, or a single wall, take a photo and in the Sherwin Williams Color Snap Visualizer®, you can “snap” colors into place for a preview of how it will look.
