PK-8 School Persuades Mom to Build New in Colliers Hill!

Liz McGuire is not the first parent to consider buying a home in a community with a great school, and the Soaring Heights PK-8 school in Erie was one of the deciding factors in choosing to build new in Colliers Hill.

“Two major factors contributed to  – one was my son who was in the 4th grade at the time,” says Liz. “He was reluctant to start at a new school, only to have to change schools in a year. And then we found the PK-8 school with Erie High School right next to it.”

Liz says he can just ride his bike to school, and it turned out to be the perfect solution.

The other consideration was her commute. As the executive director of the Colorado Music Festival & Center for Musical Arts working in Lafayette and Boulder, the Colliers Hill master-planned community is about 15 and 30 minutes away, respectively.

“I love the proximity to Erie – and that it’s close to I-25 and the Northwest Highway. And you can even get to Denver quickly, too,” she says.

Space to Spread Out

Liz and her son Ian chose the Richmond American Homes’ Alcott model. “I love this floor plan,” she says. “It’s a ranch and we were thrilled because there was an option for a fully finished basement. All my family lives on the East Coast and we wanted a place where people could visit long-term – especially my mom.”

Liz says her son, who is now 13, has two bedrooms, one he sleeps in and one for schoolwork. “He has his own niche in the house which is great for sleepovers!” Plus, the pair have a room dedicated to music – which makes sense for two musicians who love the arts – percussion included!

There’s even plenty of room for their long-haired dachshund Siegfried – named for a piece of music by the German composer Richard Wagner. The petite family furball’s favorite spot happens to be right in front of the fireplace – where his humans like to hang out, too.

“It’s been incredible, for all of us, and I’m so grateful,” she went on. “I have an office space, and I’ve been doing Cross Fit Erie online in my basement – it’s such a blessing to have this space during the last year.”

And Then There Were the Amenities!

Speaking of the last year, like a lot of people, Liz and Ian have both been doing a lot of cooking and baking – which she happens to love, anyway – homebound or not! “I looked at a lot of floor plans and this one felt really open and more spacious.”

She also started playing tennis again at the nearby tennis courts and has met lots of like-minded players. “It’s the first time I’ve played in 25 years and that’s because of Erie — it’s a bike ride away,” Liz says. “I’ve met some people I consider my friends now, and we’re going to start a league this spring.

“And I have the sweetest neighbors,” she adds. “We love that there are people always out on the walking trails with their kids and dogs.”
