Paws…For DIY Pet Projects!

For parents of pets, weekend projects for their furballs and fur-babies are fun to make, bake and create. Here are a few nooks, (trundle) beds, collars, toys, treats for the dogs and cats we love.

Although dog owners need canine-sized “mattresses” for their pet pups’ comfort, dog beds tend to appear rumpled and not-so-lovely to look at! The last thing your bedroom refuge or oft-visited living space needs is a big clump in the corner that is peppered with dog hair. But not to fear, this DIY is one project both you and Fido will love.

HGTV’s doggie trundle bed slides under your bed so that it’s out when he needs it, and hidden away when it’s not. For a portable bed (and a smaller doggie) that you can move around, check out this HGTV double decker project. With a woven hammock seat on top for hanging out time, and a lower level bed with privacy curtains, this tiered bed is perfect to take on camping trips.

A well-designed pet nook can turn wasted space into an adorable hangout for your dog or cat. Get inspired by these clever ideas from HGTV, from unused/repurposed fireplaces, wall cut-outs, hidden storage to custom under-the-stairs and other built-ins.

Projects for Your Favorite Felines

And let’s not forget our favorite felines! These cat hammocks collected by Family Handyman are made from repurposing end tables, chairs, bed frames, coffee tables and building from scratch. Speaking of scratch – some have table and chair legs wrapped in ropes to accommodate cats’ instinctive need to scratch! Here’s one from HGTV that includes a bed, too, making it triple-purposed.

Here’s a window seat for your kitty cat to lounge and laze about in the sun that streams through your living room window. Since cats like looking out windows to watch birds, here’s how to give your furbaby the best seat in the house with a basket you can hang, or situate on a window sill.

Of course, you know that you can snag a ready-made cat perch from the makers at Etsy — like this custom order no-install comfy corner for your pet to sit, stretch, lay, wait, and watch out the window – no matter the sill size – for $109 plus shipping.

And if your cat spends time outdoors and you feel inclined to relax outside, here are some catios you can order online, from one-story retreats with rooftop decks, to bi-level apartments with multiple entrances and peepholes.

Collars, Toys and Treats

If you’re looking for a bit of motivation to DIY a collar for your favorite pet, DIY Craftsy has curated several custom projects to inspire. Some of these projects require a bit of glue and ingenuity, others that are braided paracord, no-sew kerchiefs and leather and brass stud creations.
