Happy (Ending) Holiday Rom-Coms
Happiest Season, a 2020 Hulu original features Kristen Stewart in a holiday rom-com that captures a range of emotions tied to wanting your family’s acceptance, being true to yourself and trying not to ruin Christmas. Here’s the trailer so you can see if it’s worth a 7-day free trial on Hulu.
The second most popular film on Netflix right now is the holiday rom-com, A California Christmas: City Lights. A Heart-Warming Holiday Doc
The U.S. Postal Service is often essential, especially at Christmas and veteran filmmaker Dana Nachman’s documentary about the USPS’s 100-year-old program, Operation Santa, is a nice alternative diversion. Every year, thousands of wish lists, addressed to Kris Kringle at the North Pole, are collected at post offices around the country. From there, the letters are adopted by individuals who respond on behalf of Santa. Last year, Nachman and her crew were given unprecedented access to this annual effort, and this heartwarming film – Dear Santa – is the result.Rent it on Amazon Prime Video for $4.99.
The Digest Online has its own list of 12 best Christmas docs to watch– if you’d like to binge on reality this year – including Becoming Santa from OWN about a man who alters his whole lifestyle to become Santa Claus.
Best Movies of All Time
CNET, Rotten Tomatoes, Esquire and Good Housekeeping all have their own lists of the best Christmas movies of all time. CNET’s focuses on some of the best movies to stream on Disney Plus including Home Alone, A Muppet Christmas Carol, and While You Were Sleeping, while Good Housekeeping covers movies from classic to contemporary and everything in between from A Miracle on 34th Street and The Preacher’s Wife to Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square. The usual suspects are here, lots of comedies, a few musicals, in black and white, color, and colorized.
Christmas Dramas…If You’re in THAT Kind of Mood
Keira Knightley made her Christmas movie mark in the classic Love Actually—but her latest holiday flick has a much darker message. It starts out feeling familiar: A group of friends (which also includes Lily-Rose Depp) gathers at a posh English country manor for the holidays. But then they learn that the world is about to end, so this is literally their “last Christmas.” Silent Night is in theaters and will also air on AMC+.
Blackbird is a two-hankie flick, we’re told, starring the ageless Susan Sarandon as a woman who wants one final season with her family before ending her battle with ALS. Wait a minute, before you say “pass on sad movies,” and watch the trailer. There’s also deadpan humor. Drama and comedy. Pathos and “maybe the most beautifully complete film you’ll see all year.” Watch it on Amazon Prime Video – included with a subscription.
Willow and Hatch offers up its list with period dramas set in every age, era and country, including A Christmas Carol (1984) starring George C. Scott and A Midnight Clear (1992) with a young Ethan Hawke. And here’s the TV Guide list of all the Lifetime Christmas Movies this year!
