THE STEWS
The Stews Promo ShotBlending genres such as hard rock, alternative, indie and more – The Stews are a rock band that cannot be confined to just one sound. Spawned out of impromptu basement jam sessions in the Fall of 2020, the band started as a group of friends who also happened to be musicians.

Shared vision, limited obligations (like no children), and a willingness to travel thousands of miles in a crowded van—that’s how you make it as a band. The Stews have all the pieces, plus a volume of sing-along anthems and a leadman, Preston Hall, with a radio-ready voice and virtuosic guitar chops.

The Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., Boulder
8:00 p.m.

SCIENCE UNDER THE DOME
Astrotopophilia: A love of place with maps of space can express or even inspire topophilia (that is, “love of place”), a powerful way to understand ourselves in relation to the ecology, culture, and other riches that surround us. But what if a map shows a place that no human has ever been to? Can we ever truly know—much less love—a distant, alien landscape with the help of a mere map? In this talk, we’ll trace the history of planetary cartography from the earliest telescope sketches to today’s high-resolution imagery and explore the indelible link between maps and humanity’s fascination with space, whether in the pages of science fiction or guiding our boldest quests into the final frontier.

Sam Cartwright is a PhD candidate with the Department of Geological Sciences and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. His research focuses on the composition of icy landscapes at Mars’s south pole and what this can tell us about the planet’s evolving climate. Q&A and reception at the Earth Sciences & Map Library to follow from 7:45 – 8:45p.m.

MAMA’S BROKE
Mama's Broke Girl Group Mama’s Broke have spent the past eight years in a near-constant state of transience, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. They’ve brought their dark, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia.

For a group defined by constant touring, it’s not surprising that the two artists that make up Mama’s Broke, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler, met on the road. As Lisa remembers it, “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together, and within a week or two became a band.” Both coming out of traveling communities that are focused on music and protest, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the integrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism

I AM NOT YOUR PERFECT MEXICAN DAUGHTER
This vibrant and poignant adaptation of Erika L. Sánchez’s New York Times Bestseller follows Júlia, a Chicago high schooler who is definitely not your perfect Mexican daughter. That’s her older sister Olga’s role. But everything in Júlia’s life weighs heavier after Olga dies in a tragic accident, leaving Júlia to manage her family’s grief and unravel the secret truth — that her sister may not have been so perfect after all.

As she struggles with the all-too-real challenges of coming of age in Chicago and the sense that she’s failing to live up to her family’s expectations, Júlia barely clings onto her dream of becoming a writer and is left questioning what she really knows about anything.

I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is a love story to young Latinas who, in trying to find the truth about the people and the world around them, end up finding themselves.

POTTERY WORKSHOP: HALLOWEEN THEME
Join us to bring a Halloween narrative to life on clay. By using a combination of vinyl stencils and a carving technique called sgraffito, participants will have the chance to create a Halloween-themed plate using classic holiday images and original ideas of their own. Stencils allow the artist to bring precise, controlled images to their decoration surface. Sgraffito provides the opportunity for makers to illustrate on pottery and add a more fluid, organic look to the overall aesthetic. Participants will be guided through both decoration techniques and get the chance to experiment on test tiles before moving on to create a design for their plate. No clay experience is necessary. The only requirements are a willingness to take creative risks and be in the spirit of the spooky season. Instructor Jeff Osgood’s own work is predominantly hand carved functional pottery, using a combination of decaling, stenciling and sgraffito.

Their experiences as a couple pour into a living and breathing vision for 21st century folk amplified by alternative nuance and unassuming pop appeal. After gathering hundreds of millions of streams and earning widespread acclaim, the JUNO Award-nominated group take another leap forward together on their 2023 Know The Night EP [Nettwerk Music Group].

“We each bring separate things to the table,” notes Jon. “From the first time we sang together, we instantly reacted like, ‘Wow, this feels so good’. Sierra forces me to be a much better songwriter. There was a connection and synergy when we started harmonizing, and it’s only become stronger.”

Desperately in need of cash to pay for sperm, and IVF treatments to start a family, Professor Aguilar reluctantly takes the job.

IRON MAIDEN
It’s a story like no other – a sound that changed the world. In the nearly 50 years since bassist Steve Harris’ vision was birthed in the humble working-class sprawl of East London, Iron Maiden has grown to become nothing less than a rock institution.

Maiden, simply, takes no prisoners – not then, and not now, and in the decades since they cut their teeth they’ve grown to embody a spirit of fearless creative independence, unswerving dedication to their fans, and a cheerful indifference to their critics that can only be described as legendary.

By 1980 Iron Maiden had already earned themselves a cast-iron reputation for ferocious live-shows and a fiercely loyal following to match. Inspired by heavy rock and tempered by the heat of the burgeoning New Wave of British Heavy Metal, theirs was an upward ascent that would culminate in a landmark self-titled album debut which would immediately elevate them above their peers and serve as the prologue to a truly remarkable story that has captured the imagination of music lovers of every country, colour and creed.

RACHAEL YAMAGATA
Yamagata has earned her place amongst our top songwriters and vocalists, paving the way for the whispered intimacy of Billie Eilish and intertwining her own gravel and quirk. She will strip production bare on one track and build a story around orchestral arrangements in the next – whatever packs the greater punch. And she does it all with a tell-it-like-it-is honesty that can melt you in the moment and then become an anthem for life. Admirers of PJ Harvey and Fiona Apple find in Yamagata a kindred soul who dances on the line between tenderness and bold defiance, but whose sound is wholly her own. Mix in the songwriting honesty of Bruce Springsteen, the brooding flair of Rufus Wainwright, the gritty poetry of Lucinda Williams and you might come closer to pinning her down.

“Finally, an heir to Bonnie Raitt.” – NPR
“Catchy and engaging, but consistently smart to boot” — Mother Jones
“Yamagata’s voice is superb at evoking languid heartache” – Uncut
