COVENHOVEN

Covenhoven is internationally recognized indie artist Joel Van Horne, a multi-instrumental singer-songwriter whose rich harmonies, reedy baritone, and commanding falsetto have found a home with critics and fans since 2013. Through four full-length albums Covenhoven has forged a signature style; layered acoustic arrangements that roll with momentum into orchestral peaks, accompanied by lyrics that contrast hard-won wisdom with the inherent hope of the natural world—from Big Sur to his native Colorado. Bandwagon magazine writes that in IV, Covenhoven reaches “into chamber pop territory, and revealing a wider vocal range…sheltered by a gorgeous, rich string and piano accompaniment, whisks us above the campfire folk…”

THE FRETLINERS PERFORM

It is rare for there to exist a defining moment that changes the trajectory of four lives at once. But, clear as a lightning bolt in an open field, so electric was the moment The Fretliners first played together around a single microphone in the Cloverlick banjo shop barn one fateful evening, they knew they would be inseparable from that moment on.

The Fretliners are a genuine and powerful bluegrass quartet recognized for their songwriting and undeniable chemistry. Their newfound camaraderie produces an energy that is as infectious on stage as it is on record. So much so that in the summer of 2023, they won both band competitions at Telluride Bluegrass and Rockygrass Festivals—a feat that had only been accomplished once before. That September, they released their debut eponymous album to acclaim and adoration.

With one eye on the rear-view, inspired by that traditional high lonesome sound, The Fretliners navigate a road less traveled into the peaks of Rocky Mountain original bluegrass.

THE INCREDIBLE SUN & ONE SKY

This double feature in the Fiske Planetarium is an immersive, educational and even an emotional experience. Every second the Sun emits million times more energy than the world consumes every year. Where does such a huge amount of power come from? Discover our star through the breathtaking timelapses. Thanks to the real images taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory and processed by advanced mathematical methods, you will experience the true nature of the Sun and find out that it is far from being as calm as it seems at first glance.

The Sun’s activity, pronounced by terrific solar flares, sunspots and coronal mass ejections, influences our planet, by producing impressive auroras but also by damaging distribution networks and communication satellites. Is it a threat to us, then?

One Sky Project is an international collaboration focused on increasing understanding about cultural and indigenous astronomy, its historical and modern applications, and how our One Sky connects us all.

We’ll visit ancient Greece and find patterns in the Forge of Artemis; measure time with the Diné, or Navajo people to seek the Thunderbird; explore 18th-century India in Jai Singh’s Dream; journey with First People of what is now northern Canada in a Celestial Canoe; visit Japan to find the patterns of the Samurai and Stars; and venture out into the ocean with Hawaiian navigator in Wayfinders.

GHOST QUARTET / THE CATAMOUNTS

How do souls circle one another from life to life?  GHOST QUARTET explores this question in a song-cycle which interweaves four stories across seven centuries: a fairy tale about two sisters, an astronomer, and a lazy evil bear; a retelling of Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”; a purgatorial intermezzo about Scheherazade and a contemporary fable about a subway murder.

In The Catamounts’ regional premiere production, you will be invited into a transformed Carsen Theater, seated in an intimate parlor on antique sofas or plush floor pillows, amid softly lit lamps and chandeliers, and served whisky and warm drinks. We invite you to get cozy while you take in the four-person ensemble of singer-musicians performing an array of story-songs that span genres: gospel, folk, honkey-tonk, electropop, doo-wop and even the jazz of Thelonious Monk. You may even be (literally) invited to play along.
