This weekend you can enjoy all sorts of western events and themed rodeos at the National Western Stock Show, as well as films, classes and performances by comedians, musicians, and more — with various locations in nearby Boulder, Denver, Lafayette and Longmont.

PAINT AND SIP: MUG ART
In this paint and sip gathering, you’ll be painting on secondhand mugs using porcelain markers so you can cure the ink in the oven afterwards to make it dishwasher safe! Suggested ideas on what to paint will be provided, or you can bring your own photos or printouts for inspiration. Wine and coffee will be available for purchase through Center, but food will not be provided, so feel free to bring your own food and drink.

OH BOY, IT’S BUDDY HOLLY!
In just three short years, Buddy Holly set the music world on fire and forever changed the face and sound of rock and roll. Armed with a Fender Stratocaster guitar, his signature specs and a charismatic blend of rockabilly swagger, Buddy explodes onto the stage in this jukebox musical fully loaded with classics “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy,” “That’ll Be the Day,” “Well…All Right,” “Not Fade Away” and many more with an encore that will have you on your feet and dancing in the aisles. DIRTWIRE AT THE AGGIE
Dirtwire stands poised between ancient and modern technology, a blend of ethnomusicology and the psychedelic trance state, gut-bucket delta blues and what the band variously dubs “back-porch space cowboy blues, swamptronica, and electro-twang.” Dirtwire plays an array of instruments both ancient and modern, including West African kamale ngonis, jaw harps, space fiddles, whamola basses, Rickenbacher electric 12 string guitars, bowed Banjos and mouth harps from around the globe, all interwoven into modern laptop beat creation. Woven into each is the exploration of where live instruments meet computer production, and where tradition meets experimentation.

JOHN MELLENCAMP PAINTINGS
An accomplished painter, collector, and activist, Mellencamp exposes unsettling but beautiful truths with an attitude of defiance and narrative sensibility that echoes the earnest voice of the American heartland. In addition to recent paintings, this exhibition includes a selection of assemblages, adding yet another dimension to a unique body of work.
As his musical career flourished, John Mellencamp began to paint earnestly in the 1980s with an early affinity for portraiture influenced by the works of Otto Dix and Max Beckmann. His kinship with the German Expressionism of the early Twentieth century, with its existential focus on the human condition, serves as the foundation for the development of Mellencamp’s “oeuvre”. His large-scale oil portraits and mixed-media pieces document America’s heart and soul, revealing unsettling but beautiful truths with a kind of anti-establishment frown, with a rich sense of narrative.
Like his music, Mellencamp’s paintings are carefully composed through the structural requirements of harmony, rhythm and order, and are thematically in line with the small-town, earnest voice of the heartland. John Mellencamp will not be at the exhibit.

JOE PERA: COMEDY IN ICE
Joe Pera is a character comedian playing a part. Similar characters over the years would include Pee-Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) and Gilbert Gottfried, Andrew Clay’s Diceman and Larry the Cable Guy. Best known for his “Joe Pera Talks with You” show on Adult Swim, Joe talks in earnest to the audience about seemingly mundane topics like church bulletins, iron, Sunday breakfast, fall drives and music.

BOULDER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Dvorak prophesied in 1892 that the music of the future would come from African American spirituals. He also used American styles and folk music to create the first great “American” symphony of the New World.
The performances this weekend include Boulder Symphony’s own principal oboe, Ingrid Anderson, performing John Clay Allen’s newly commissioned Oboe Concerto! Also featured will be John William’s Themes from Jurassic Park and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Song of Hiawatha.

SNOWSHOE HIKE
We invite you to strap on the snowshoes (wild bear provided), put on your warm layers, drink some warm tea, and hit the trails with us on a sure to please Saturday mornings this winter. Participants will keep moving on snowshoes as we explore as a community how wildlife adapts to winter conditions, the fun science behind snow, and so much!

ROLLER DERBY ACTION!
This sounds like fun, watching the competitive contact sport of roller derby where two teams on roller skates lap around a track for lots of checks and bumps. And it’s just 20 minutes from your front door. BOULDER COUNTY ROLLER DERBY (BCRD) is a WFTDA roller derby league based out of Longmont, Colorado, and representing the Boulder County region. Founded in Summer 2011, its mission is to empower people through the social and athletic revolution that is roller derby.

LAFAYETTE’S 17TH ANNUAL MLK CELEBRATION
Next week the annual celebration honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will kickoff with a parade beginning at the Flatirons Church and continuting to Centaurus High School (10300 S. Boulder Rd.) where a “drive-in” program will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. This is a family-friendly event and decorated cars are welcomed!
The drive-in program will include a welcome by local officials, slam poetry, performances by local artist Rebecca Hartt and Boulder-based band Fruta Brutal. The drive-in program will be accessible via FM radio. Event t-shirts and children’s craft kits distributed at the onset of the program (while supplies last).

SAMANTHA FISH TOUR
Guitarist Samantha Fish has never been afraid to mix things up. Though her albums are filed in the “blues” category, influences from other genres – including soul, R&B, and rap – have showed up in her music, and she occasionally drops a ferocious cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” into her sets. Over the course of her career as an award-winning artist, singer/songwriter/guitarist Fish has brought extraordinary power to her self-expression, capturing her inner world in combustible riffs, visceral rhythms, and spine-tingling vocal work.
For Fish, one of the greatest joys of making music is the powerful exchange of energy at her incendiary live shows. “Anytime I play live, I just want to want to make people forget about everything else in the world and feel that same joy that I feel on stage,” she says.

SYMPHONIC SENSATIONS
Discover how composers use the instruments of the orchestra to ‘sound paint’ for story, character, and emotions in music. In this interactive concert you will hear music featuring each of the families of instruments, and the whole orchestra. Engaging for all ages, this program lets you choose different solutions to ‘sound paint’ in the moment using the orchestra, and then compare those to Sergei Prokofiev’s choices in his ballet music for Cinderella.
