Transform Your Decor Using Paint and Wallpaper
Buckle up, all you do-it-yourselfers, we found a few simple, easy-to-imitate changes to your décor that can reap big – even giant – aesthetic rewards! Some are tiny little weekend projects like ceiling moulding, painted baseboards and canvas art, others are things like adding wallpaper where you’d least expect it! Take a look at these small-scale DIY decorating ideas using paint and paper that can reenergize your space!
Paint Without Constraint
Safe interior designs avoid slathering bold colors on every wall of, say, a living room. It takes a brave DIYer to roll navy blue paint everywhere the eye can see. The party line is that dark colors tend to make rooms look smaller, and neutral colors are easier to work with when it comes to decorating. Here’s a less risky paint project that covers only the baseboards with a daring color (like Blueprint, Behr’s 2019 color of the year). That makes a statement, too, just not as overwhelming!
Similarly, rimming the top of a room with paint, above a length of trim or moulding is eye-catching and captivating. Your eye is irresistibly drawn upwards and if you use a bold red-orange swath of color like the designers at HGTV did, your heart might beat a little faster every time you enter the room!

Give it the Stair Treatment
Blogger Debbie at Painted Therapy takes you through a painting project that makes ordinary wooden stairs look like they’re topped with a decorative runner. Now there’s a place you can go bold with color!
And here’s an idea that stopped us in our tracks – taking wallpaper and applying it to the facing side of the stairs. Your eye follows the striped color scheme upwards to a complementary bookcase at the landing where the wallpaper brilliantly mimics the colorful book bindings! What a creative blend of elements, dreamed up by Jeff Troyer Associates!
Country Living shows off a few more stair projects, including one that painted the stair treads blue, along with the handrail and first post. Look for another example that used Black Suede (Behr) paint on the faces with stenciled white numbers. A third used brass house numbers from Home Depot painted the same color as adjacent walls.
DIY Wall Art with Paint and Paper
This project uses various shades of the same color to create a pixelated checkerboard on canvas. Amanda at Wit and Whistle loves playing around with paper and stumbled onto this idea when she accidentally scaled a photo down to 15 pixels. She loved the look and got out her watercolors. Amanda says you’ll need a digital photo, some photo editing software, ruler pencil and watercolors. Check out her instructions for a gray-hued grid that’s fascinating to study.
