Favorite Apple Recipes From Around the World!

It doesn’t get any more American than apple pie—but with all the great apples in season right now, why stop there? Check out these apple-centric recipes that are inspired by different cultures from all around the world!

For many of us, when we think of special apple concoctions our thoughts and daydreams invariably drift toward the sweet to eat category, in pastries, pies, cakes and cobblers. This classic recipe for Apple Pie is bursting with layers of sweet and tangy apples sandwiched between a perfectly flaky-buttery crust! Simply Recipes recommends using a variety of apple types for best flavor and promises a no-fail crust. And for a delicious sour cream apple pie with butter streusel topping, check out Elise Bauer’s recipe!

Oh, and blogger Ashley from Wishes and Dishes makes a mean Apple Pie Bread! She dices instead of shredding the apples, giving it a different and she says more desirable texture.

Many people prefer apple crisp to pie because of the crunchy oat topping! You also won’t have to bother with rolling out a crust, and you’re still rewarded with the apple-pie filling you love. Check out this popular Apple Crisp recipe from Martha Stewart .

While pie is a particularly American dessert, many other countries have their own version of apple desserts that are as popular in their culture as apple pie is here. Coffee shops all over Poland always feature Szarlotka in their pastry display cases.

This homemade Polish Apple Cake recipe is authentic and tends to be lower in sugar than its American counterparts, leading to a less-sweet (but no less delicious) bite! The secret is to freeze the dough for the topping while you’re working on the rest of the cake and grate it over the top. This ensures that the topping comes out lighter and more crumbly than the sturdy cake beneath it. We think this is one of those cakes that’s best baked the day before you need it. It gives it a chance for the cake on the bottom to absorb some of that wonderful apple and cinnamon flavor.

If you want to impress, there’s nothing like the symmetry of the classic French Apple Tart! This Tarte aux Pommes recipe from Joy of Baking gives you a double dose of apples, beginning with a layer of lightly-sweetened applesauce that is topped with artfully arranged apples slices.

Apple Pancakes, Butter and Bratwurst!

Perfect for a special brunch, these German Apple Pancakes from Taste of Home are baked in a skillet in the oven and cut into individual serving portions so you don’t have to make individual pancakes for each serving.

Another recipe that’s an Old World favorite is this Bratwurst with Sauerkraut & Apples dish from Taste of Home. This flavorful, savory slow-cooker recipe is perfect for weeknights or special occasions, and originates from the Erie in Pennsylvania! Home chef Gerald Hetrick uses German-style beer in his recipe and serves it with spaetzle or pretzel brat buns.

Colonial Apple Butter

One way to find new apple recipes is to go back in time! American Colonial recipes are alive through the recipes of Pennsylvania Dutch traditions, including this unique spread for bread or toast, Apple Butter. With the consistency of very thick applesauce, apple butter has a buttery texture (though there’s no butter in it), thanks to plenty of spices and a long cooking time. And nothing compares to homemade apple butter, the taste or especially the fragrance of it cooking on the stove or in your slow cooker!

Which Apples to Pick?

Whether you are shopping in the grocery store or the last of the Farmers’ Markets, you’ll undoubtedly be presented by a wide array of apple varieties from which to choose. The Kitchn walks you through the five best varieties for cooking and baking, including Granny Smith, Jonathan, Cortland, Braeburn and Honey Crisp.
