Winter Fun Indoors and Out!

When everyone gets bored with the indoor things to do at home, there are plenty of activities to explore elsewhere, and not far from your front door!

Moving Targets

In addition to our very own YMCA at the Overlook’s programs and classes, we told you last summer about the Erie Community Center on Powers Street – it’s also a great place to burn up extra energy and keep everybody occupied in the winter, too! The new interactive Winter/Spring 2018 guide is now out and covers all sorts of programs, classes, activities and special events through May 31.

If you have wee ones who need to learn how to ski and snowboard before hitting the bunny runs, Shredder Urban Ski and Snowboard Park is the go-to school of choice. The hills at this indoor facility are primed with a combination of water and wax that helps skiers slide down the surface and grip for turning and stopping. Gear is included, but you can bring your own to learn the basics and to sharpen ski skills!

Located just 22 minutes from Colliers Hill, Unser Karting is an upscale go-kart racing facility and promises a wild ride! The motorsport uses small, open, four-wheeled vehicles that whiz around the indoor track and you’ll see a leader board at the Unser website for the best race times and lap times. All kart racers under the age of 18 must have a valid Minor Waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Mid-Air Adventures in Thornton, about 17 minutes from Colliers Hill, is a 12,000-square-foot facility with zip lines, giant swings, a huge climbing wall, rope bridges and slides.

All guests can be fitted for harnesses and a quick safety lesson from instructors before zipping through the air. Talk about some zippy indoor fun, right?

Indoor Animal Fun

The Aquarium at 700 Water Street (how appropriate!) in downtown Denver is the perfect place for the entire family to spend an afternoon.  With over 500 species of animals: sharks, mermaids, cute otters, stingrays, crazy archerfish that can spray bugs off of leaves and eat them, you won’t be bored here! A massive reenacted flash flood, will get your heart racing and there’s so much indoor fun here, everyone will remember this trip long after it’s over. Check the website for Mystic Mermaid show times, and after you’ve walked through each exhibit, the journey ends with games and activities from face painting to palm tree climbing, concessions and more.

If you’ve worked up an appetite, at the Aquarium Restaurant your group can sit and watch sea life as you eat.

The Butterfly Pavilion is a great destination on cold days – you can pretend you’re on vacation in a tropical rainforest in the Wings of the Tropics exhibit. It’s only 16 miles away on W. 104th and with more than 5,000 creatures housed in the Pavilion — 1,600 of them butterflies — they come from rainforests around the world. Kids can meet – and hold —  Rosie the resident tarantula in the Crawl-A-See-Em exhibit. You can, too, so muster up some bravado and give little Rosie your forearm. (We know, it gives us the goosies, too!)  Don’t miss the Water’s Edge exhibit where you all can touch live sea stars, horseshoe crabs and other aquatic invertebrates from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Star Gazing and Laser Shows

The Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado in Boulder offers a series of laser shows (just now resuming after a huge renovation!) like Laser Pink Floyd, Laser Beatles, Laser Gaga and Laser Queen, plus movies, concerts, live talks and space odyssey special events.
